Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition that affects a person’s mood, energy, concentration and thoughts. They experience extreme and lasting shifts into episodes of mania and depression.

Manic Episodes

In Bipolar Disorder, Type I, the manic episodes last at least 7 days. Symptoms are so severe that they cause significant disruption to the person’s life and may require hospitalization.

In Bipolar Disorder, Type II, the manic episodes last at least 4 days and symptoms are less severe.

Depressive Episodes

Depressive episodes last two weeks or more.

Not everyone with Bipolar I will experience depressive episodes.

In Bipolar II, the depressive episodes are often more severe and longer lasting.

Depressive episodes may require hospitalization if suicidal thoughts are present.

Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features

During manic and depressive episodes, people may experience symptoms of psychosis.
